There are two fundamental types of hepatic steatosis (fatty liver disease): non-alcoholic (NAFLD) and alcoholic steatohepatitis (alcoholic fatty liver disease). Fatty liver disease is a disease where fat forms in the liver cells. This may cause hepatitis (liver inflammation), which can, in turn, progress to scarring and irrecoverable damage. If the intensity of the condition advances or if it's left untreated, FLD can evolve to liver cirrhosis and ultimately liver failure.

It is essential to notice the symptoms your body is conveying to you. Connect with a gastroenterologist at Colorado Gastroenterology as soon as possible in Denver, CO to schedule a consultation if you are worried that you may have fatty liver disease.

Hepatic steatosis can frequently appear in the body with zero symptoms. A few of the signs that might emerge, however, could include:

  • Discomfort in the upper right abdomen
  • Red palms
  • Oversized blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Feeling a fullness in the center or top right side of the abdomen
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Enlarged liver
  • Weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Oversized
  • Abdominal enlargement and swelling in the legs

There are some classifications of fatty liver disease in Denver, CO, with non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis (fatty liver disease) and alcoholic FLD being the primary two. The reasons for the non-alcoholic conditions are not well-known, but they are related to obesity, metabolic syndrome, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), and enhanced levels of lipid in the blood. AFLD is triggered by consuming excess alcohol.

To find out additional information on the symptoms and causes of fatty liver disease, schedule an appointment with the GI specialists at Colorado Gastroenterology. They will provide detailed information to help you along on your journey to optimal health.

Treatments deviate depending on the kind of hepatic steatosis and how injured the liver is. Oftentimes, the liver is not at a severe state and proceeds to perform as normal. However, if treatment is appropriate, your Colorado Gastroenterology GI doctor may advise the following:

  • Hepatitis A and B vaccinations
  • Losing weight
  • Avoiding alcohol (if alcoholic fatty liver disease is present)
  • Liver transplant

I saw Dr Brenner years ago and decided to do a follow up. She was as wonderful as I remember 9 years ago. Getting an appointment scheduled was not an issue, and I was happy to do a an appointment over the phone as well. Great experience.

Dr. Rufner is excellent. This was only my first appt. so I will come back and update this review after my second. I was able to really talk to him and tell him everything and he listened really well and explained in detail what I needed to be educated on and the procedures we would be doing together to find answers to get to recovery. I also can't say enough good things about NeNe his scheduler. She has a great caring personality on top of being efficient. What a find in an employee. I will again up date this later but I recommend going to him for any GI needs.
